MLS: New England Revolution tangle with New York City FC, Seattle Sounders entertain Minnesota United

It looks set to be another gripping week in the MLS, as teams start to set their sights on the play-offs. In this preview, we will give you the lowdown on the monumental Eastern Conference clash between New England Revolution and New York City FC. We will also take a deep dive into Seattle Sounders v Minnesota United.

New England Revolution putting more distance between themselves and their rivals

The chasm at the top of the Eastern Conference is significant. However, New England Revolution are showing no signs of relenting as they lay down the gauntlet. Currently, the Revs are 14 points clear of their nearest challengers Orlando City, and they have been electric for most of the campaign.

However, their recent nine-match unbeaten streak was broken by New York City FC at the end of last month. Nevertheless, they bounced back last weekend with a 1-0 away win to Philadelphia Union. Matt Polster turned home Arnor Traustason’s free-kick in the 33rd minute. That proved to be the difference between the two sides.

New England Revolution taking their time with Carles Gil

Carles Gil is already a candidate for the MVP (Most Valued Player) award after supplying a league-leading 15 assists so far this season. And that’s despite missing the last six games with a muscular injury. He returned to the fray with a cameo appearance against Union, and he won’t be rushed back into action.

New York City FC hoping for quick pick-me-up after Nashville defeat

New York City FC will have to dust themselves down and pick themselves up. Last weekend was a rather damning one as they slumped to a 3-1 away defeat to Nashville. It was a rather tetchy affair as both sides were reduced to 10 men. However, although New York City scored in the 90th minute, they were second best.

New York City FC will take comfort from recent display against New England Revolution

Although New York City FC will have been left reeling by their display against Nashville, they acquitted themselves well against the Revs at the end of last month. A 2-0 victory thanks to a double from Valentin Castellanos augurs well. But they will need to channel their energy in the right way.

Seattle Sounders’ serene progress checked by Portland Timbers

Although they will face stiff competition from Colorado Rapids and Sporting Kansas to finish top of the Western Conference, Seattle Sounders have largely been excellent for most of the campaign. Sitting at the summit, the Sounders are one point ahead of the Rapids. However, they will need to respond after a 2-0 defeat at home to the Portland Timbers last week.

Meanwhile, last week the Sounders announced they had hired Freddy Juarez as their new assistant coach. Juarez stepped down from his role as Real Salt Lake head coach, and Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer thinks Juarez is a great addition to his backroom staff. He said: “Freddy’s a humble guy, nice guy. He’s going to fit in great.”

Meanwhile, Minnesota United are still firmly in the playoff picture. Sitting fifth in the Western Conference, Minnesota will be feeling fresh after a two-week break. In their previous outing, they beat Houston Dynamo 2-1, and Adrien Hunou helped himself to a brace.

Seattle Sounders v Minnesota United: unlocking the vault on past matches

The Sounders will relish hosting Minnesota if recent meetings are anything to go by. Indeed, the Sounders have enjoyed the home advantage as they have won each of their past two clashes on home soil against Minnesota. Perhaps what was most telling was the resounding 4-0 victory earlier this season.

On that day, the Sounders ripped Minnesota to shreds, as Joao Paulo netted the opener before Raul Ruidiaz grabbed a quick-fire double. Fredy Montero also got on the scoresheet to cap a fine day for the Sounders. However, the Sounders will also be mindful that they lost 1-0 to Minnesota back in July, so they won’t take anything for granted!
