MLS Preview: Los Angeles Galaxy and New York City FC looking to make big moves

In the first round of fixtures after the recent break, there were a glut of goals. There are some fascinating matches to look forward to this weekend, including the San Jose Earthquakes v Los Angeles Galaxy in the early hours of Sunday morning. While New York City FC will entertain D.C. United later that day. We will also check in on the latest match odds.

San Jose Earthquakes looking to get back on track after disappointing draw

After a stunning start to the MLS campaign in which they claimed three wins from their first four games, the Quakes are winless in their last five. They were rather soporific in their lasting outing which was a goalless draw away to Austin. Had it not been for their early season form, the Quakes may well have been propping up the Western Conference.

At the time of writing, the Quakes are ensconced just outside the playoffs. They have a big week ahead as they are on the road against Orlando City before taking on LA Galaxy. Against Austin, the Quakes shaded things in terms of possession, but Quakes need to find more of a cutting edge in front of goal if they are going to climb the table.

San Jose Earthquakes eyeing revenge for California Clasico defeat

The Quakes will have revenge on their minds against LA Galaxy. When the sides last met a month ago, Galaxy edged proceedings thanks to a Tanner Beason own goal. During the recent break, however, the Quakes shared some good news as they announced a deal for MLS SuperDraft pick George Asomani. But it is unclear when he will make his debut for his new side.

LA Galaxy have to shake off Seattle Sounders setback

LA Galaxy have impressed at times this season, but the Seattle Sounders remain the benchmark for the rest of the sides in the Western Conference. And Galaxy will be furious with how they let things unravel against the Sounders last weekend after relinquishing a 1-0 lead. Nevertheless, a victory could give Galaxy lift off, and they have two games in hand over Sporting Kansas City.

LA Galaxy entering the ‘dog days’ of MLS

After nine games, the MLS is beginning to take shape. While the Sounders spoiled the return of fans to Dignity Health Sports Park for the first time in 15 months, Galaxy coach Greg Vanney is adamant the coming weeks will determine whether his side will last the course this term. He said: “We’re starting to find out a little more who’s for real.”

New York City FC have to cut out defensive blunders

There were a few defensive mishaps for New York City FC last weekend, as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat last weekend against New England Revolution. New York seemed to be on course to pick up a point when Ismael Tajouri-Shradi equalized five minutes from time, but they were outdone by Thomas McNamara.

Against Revolution, New York City FC were also thwarted by Matt Turner, who pulled off some brilliant stops. But New York will have to be more switched on at the back against DC United, otherwise they will be punished. The one positive that can be taken from the defeat was that Thiago Andrade made his debut, and he scored within minutes of coming on.

Nevertheless, New York City FC have strength in depth in their squad. The additions of Andrade, Talles Magno, and Santiago Rodriguez gives New York City FC plenty of options up front. And City coach Ronny Deila has implored the fans to be patient. He said: “They need to adapt to us and our style.”

New York City v D.C. United: A tale of past encounters

Head-to-head encounters can often be a good gauge of how things may unfold. New York City FC have shaded it, as they have won five, and drawn three of the past 12 clashes. D.C. United ran out 2-1 winners at home last term. After going 1-0 down inside 15 minutes, they responded well and secured a 2-1 victory.

But New York City FC will look back with fond memories on their 4-1 thrashing of DC United last season. A Valentin Castellanos set New York City on their way to victory before Tajouri-Shradi grabbed a double in the second half before Keaton Parks wrapped up the points. At present, just a solitary point separates both sides in the Eastern Conference.
