Champions League preview: Anfield awaits

Atletico need a win at Anfield

Atletico Madrid’s trip to Anfield for Wednesday night’s Champions League group B match has hit us right in the feels.

Most of us would have never imagined that when Atletico travelled to Anfield back in March 2020 we’d be thrust into a global pandemic days after. It was a dark time for our generation, with all sports suspended as we waded into the unknown. That was a magical night in Liverpool, where the visitors ran out 3-2 winners in front of a packed Anfield. The weeks that followed were chaotic, quiet, depressing, confusing, frustrating and above all extremely sad.

Football has an odd way of cheering us up and we’re truly blessed to be enjoying a full, regular season this term, and the most important thing is that fans have since also been welcomed back too. Just to add some context, when sports events were re-allowed, no fans were allowed and the Champions League and Europa League took part in mini tournaments at the tail end of the league campaigns. Tough times indeed and we’d hate to see the return of empty stadiums.

Anfield tomorrow night will certainly not be empty. Liverpool are yet to drop a single point in the Champions League this season, Mo Salah is in the form of his life and the Reds are also undefeated in the Premier League.

Liverpudlians will also see the return of a former Anfield hero as Luis Suarez travels with the squad to face his old team. Many rate him as Liverpool’s best ever number 9 and he will forever hold a place in the hearts of the Anfield faithful.

He’s there on a mission though, as Atletico need to collect points in a tough group. Interestingly, the first leg mirrored the pre-pandemic scoreline. Liverpool ran riot in the first half in Madrid, only for Griezmann to pull his side back level with a brace. A red card followed for him and Liverpool made the numerical advantage count as they grabbed the winning goal.

Both teams to score here is almost a certainty, such is the firepower both sides store. Liverpool have scored 11 Champions League goals in three games, while Ateltico’s tally of four pales in comparison. This group has been entertaining, as Porto and Milan are certainly not there to make up the numbers. AC Milan, undefeated in the Serie A so far have somehow failed to score a single point in Europe so far while Porto are pushing Atletico for the all-important second spot.

Group B is tight, and as Porto and Milan lock horns in the earlier kick off on Wednesday, Ateltico Madrid will know that result, which should add some extra pressure on Diego Simeone’s men.

Atleti’s main problem is that Liverpool are a different beast at home. That crowd is the 12th man and they are undefeated in their last 13 home matches. Salah has helped himself to five Champions League goals so far this season and his brilliance may be the difference between the two sides tonight.

We’re going for a Liverpool win tonight, with Salah amongst the goals, and we’re sure it will be a fun game to watch. To be honest, we’re just grateful to be coming out of the pandemic, rather than staring at it as we were all those months ago, when this fixture gave us so much joy…

Liverpool are 16/25 to win with Salah priced at 19/20 to score.
