How to play Craps’ – a Casumo Craps guide

The Casumo Craps Guide

Have you been meaning to give online Craps a try but you’re not sure how this table game works? Look no further! Casumo have come to the rescue with their ultimate Casumo Craps guide. Simply give this guide a quick read and within minutes, you’ll find yourself ready to roll!

What is Craps?

So let’s kick off, shall we. In short: Craps is a game of chance, played with a pair of dice. Players can make wagers on the outcome of the roll, or a series of rolls. In Craps, the only player who has to place a bet before the first roll of the game is the ‘Shooter’, the person who rolls the dice.
Even though Craps is a game of chance, you could learn to understand the odds of rolling different numbers. Hopefully once you reach the end of this Casumo Craps guide, you’ll have a better understanding of it all!
In Craps, there are a total of 36 possible number combinations. Because you’re using two dice, your chances of rolling a specific number in Craps are pre-determined by the number of die combinations that add up to that number.

For example, 2 can only be rolled with two 1s, but 4 can be rolled with either a 1 and a 3 or two 2s. This means that you have twice the chance of rolling a 4 as you do a 2. Because the 7 has the biggest number of combinations (six), it’s the number with the highest potential to come up. The 7 is therefore considered the “magic number” in Craps.

The Craps table

Interesting fact: It takes four people to properly manage a Craps table in a land-based casino! Craps tables are usually the centre of activity in a casino. They’ll have a ton of people buzzing around them, some playing and some just enjoying the show. Usually, there are four casino employees standing around a Craps table. There’s the ‘Box person’ who takes note of the outcome of every roll and keeps an eye on the chips being passed around. Then there are two dealers who place bets on the table and push chips to and fro. The ‘Stickperson’ gives the dice to the players and takes care of the ‘Proposition Bets’ placed at the centre of the table.

Types of bets in Craps

If you take a look at the Craps table, both online and offline, you can see that it’s not just dice and numbers. The layout of a Craps table has a handful of areas for different betting options.

The first roll (the ‘Come out’ roll) sets the point and you can bet either on the ‘Pass Line’ or the ‘Don’t Pass Line’.

The Pass Line bet

The Pass Line bet means you bet that the Shooter will pass (win) by rolling out a natural (7 or 11) on the first throw.

The Don’t Pass Line bet

The Don’t Pass Line means you’re betting on the opposite outcome. You’ll bet that the Shooter will not pass (lose) by rolling a 2, 3 or 12 (‘craps’) on the first throw.

Bets are then settled. If the first throw is a 12, the bet is called a ‘Push’, which means that nothing happens. You don’t win, but you don’t lose either.

If the first throw is a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, that number is the Shooter’s point. He’ll continue to throw until rolling the same number again and wins or throws 7 and misses out (‘craps out’). The Shooter loses both his bet and the dice, which have to be passed on to the next player on the left.

You can place these bets only before the point has been established on the table. Once the point has been rolled out and the Shooter needs to roll the sum again, you can place a ‘Come’ or ‘Don’t Come’ bet.

Come Bets

The Come bet is basically the same as the Pass Line bet. You’ll have to place your bet in the ‘Come box’ and you’ll win on 7 or 11 or lose when any of the Craps numbers (2, 3 or 12) are rolled.

Don’t Come Bets

The Don’t Come bet is just like the Don’t pass bet. You’re in luck if the Shooter rolls a 2 or 3, not so much if it’s a 7 or 11. The number 12 equals a ‘Push’ again.

Neither Pass nor Come bets can be turned off. You bet and wait until it plays itself out. But you can make additional bets on the Come bet point, too. And those you can withhold or increase at any time.

Proposition Bets

Proposition bets go in the center section of the table. There are two sections: ‘Hardways’ and ‘One Roll’ bets. One Roll bets are just as they say, bets on a single roll on a specific number. Hardways are bets that require the numbers to be rolled “the hard way”. For example, 8 the hard way is rolled with two 4s, and 6 the hard way is rolled with two 3s.

Any 7

Any 7 is a bet that 7 will be rolled in any combination.

Any Craps

This is a one-roll bet that can be placed any time. There are four combinations for rolling Craps (2, 3, or 12), making the chances of rolling it in a single roll 4 in 36 (the total of combinations).

2, 3, 11, and 12

This is also a one-roll bet made in the center of the table. The odds on rolling a 2 or a 12 are 35 to 1, with a payoff usually of 30 to 1.

Horn Bets

This bet is a bet on 2, 3, 11, and 12 all at once. You’ll need to place four chips (one for each number) and the payoffs are the same as those for the individual numbers above.

Hardway Bets

These aren’t one-roll bets. When you bet on a number the hard way, you’re betting that it will come up as a pair before it comes up in any other combination. For example, if you’re betting on a Hardway 6, you’re betting that two 3s will come up before a 4 and a 2 come up or a 5 and a 1 come up.

Place Bets

Place bets can be made on the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. When you make a Place bet, you are betting that a particular number will be rolled before the 7 is rolled. Place bets are put on the layout for you by the dealer.

Field Bets

The Field is the large area near the edge of each side of the layout with the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12. You place your chips in the Field yourself, on no particular number. Field bets are one-roll bets. You’ll win if a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 is rolled. A 5, 6, 7, or 8 will make you lose.

Big 6 and Big 8 bets

These are simple bets that can be placed at any time. You place your chips on the 6 or the 8 (in the Big 6 and Big 8 section of the layout) or on both, and hope that the 6 or the 8 is rolled before the 7.

How to win at Craps

Besides having read through our Casumo Craps guide, the best way to learn the game of Craps is to practice online craps for free until you feel confident enough to try playing with real money. Your best chances to win at Craps are with the ‘Pass / Don’t Pass’ or the ‘Come / Don’t Come’ bets. As mentioned earlier, there are 36 possible ways to land a combination with 2 dice. You can learn to calculate the advantage (the edge) that the house has. This way, you can choose to place bets that could give you a minimal house advantage. Some bets have less than 1% advantage for the house and others 10%. It all depends on you and which ‘edge’ you would want to give the house.
