Casumonews: The secret of always being happy

How many Brits does it take to find out what makes people happy in England? 2,000 of course.

Here at Casumo we take the fight against boredom quite seriously, always monitorin’ the levels of boredom in the universe. As Sun Tzu once wrote, ‘If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.’ And boredom is our enemy.

In a recent survey we asked a bunch of questions to two thousand people aged 35 and over, trying to determine what brings a smile on English people’s faces.

Well, for starters, it seems that boredom levels in Britain are at an all-time low. And surprisingly, we owe this to t e c h n o l o g y. True story. Eight in ten Brits are rarely or never bored, and they say it’s because with their phone nearby there’s always something to do.

Here are some juicy highlights from our survey:

  • 20% of Brits say they are never without their phones, and 75% reckon their lives are better because of it. Boom.
  • 63% of respondents said that they’re less bored today than they were 20 years ago, and attribute that directly to having a smartphone.
  • On average, people unlock their phones more than 10 times a day, take a peek at the screen and then put them away again without accomplishing anything.
  • And in the morning, checking the phone comes ahead of brushing teeth, eating breakfast or smoochin’ with their partner.
  • Staring at a phone is also one of Brits’ top ways of erasing boredom, with 45% picking it out as their top choice.
  • Watching TV unsurprisingly topped the list, with seven in 10 saying it’s their best boredom-buster.
  • 44% spend their down-time browsing the internet or playing games on a computer or laptop.
  • Two thirds of the country believe they’re simply too busy to be bored.
  • On average, 5:40 pm is the time when an adult can finally call it a day and just chillax.
  • While their levels of stimulation may have never been higher, many Brits’ attention spans are shortening. When reading an article online, it takes an average of just 47 seconds for attention to start to drift.
  • And Brits admit to checking their phone 18 minutes after waking up, 28 minutes into a work meeting, 32 minutes on a date and 29 minutes after sex.
