Group D preview

Euro 2020: Do England have Group D in the bag?

Euro 2020 is almost upon us! And with that comes the time to check out each of the groups to see who will come top and move on to the next phase. One of the most popular groups this year is Group D. That’s because it’s home to two of the more favoured teams this year, England and Croatia. But which one is more likely to come out on top in this major clash? And do either of the other teams stand a chance at causing an upset?

Will England rule the waves?

Without a doubt, England are the favourites to take Group D. At 4/9 to take the top spot in the group, we really think so too. England have long had strong players in their teams, but, surprisingly, they’ve not always made it count. Could this be their year though?

With players like Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Manson Mount all lined up to play, the team is an impressive one. On top of that, they’re entering the group on a run of excellent form having lost just 2 out of their last 10 matches.

Can Croatia come up Trumps?

Right behind England is Croatia. Similar to the English, this team are also enjoying some good form in the run-up to the tournament. While not as highly favoured as the English, Croatia are nevertheless one of the more favoured teams to come out top of this group (odds are currently 3/1) so are likely to make things tough for the England side. They’re also coming in off the back of a finalist position in the World Cup 2018, so we know they have what it takes to push the whole way.

Will Scotland Make England Think Again?

The Scottish team are the underdog story in this group. In fact, the team barely scraped into qualifying for Euro 2020 as it is. They do get the home advantage and will be playing all their games, bar the one against England, at home in Glasgow. This may help them, but it also might not be enough. Despite that, this is a plucky team, that has fought hard to get to this position, so we won’t discount this tenacious Scottish side just yet. With Manchester United midfielder, Scott McTominay a driving force in the team, they shouldn’t be ruled out just yet, despite their odds of 13/1 to take the group.

Could the Czech Republic Turn the Tables?

Finally, Group D has a second underdog in this pool, the Czech Republic. This team has worked very hard to get where it is today and deserves every bit of credit. This is a team that knows how to hit and hit hard. In fact, if either of the two favourites underestimates this team, they might well pay for it. There are a number of top players in this side too, including midfielder Tomas Soucek and striker Patrik Schick, both of whom can change the game in an instant.

Final thoughts

At the end of the day, England does indeed look like they might triumph. But, the English team have been known to choke before, not coming together consistently and cohesively enough to score regular wins. However, the team is playing at home in Wembley for all three of its Group D games, which really will count for a lot in this highly competitive group.

If Croatia can come out strong in their opening game against England, the table might look a little different. But if England beat Croatia from the outset, this Group may well be set. Let’s not forget, anything can happen in football, so maybe one of the underdogs can still cause an upset.
