Ligue 1 preview

Ligue 1 19/02/2022: RC Lens host Lyon, PSG look to maintain title charge against Nantes

While it seems that Paris Saint-Germain are set to run away with Ligue 1, things are intensifying in the race for Europe. This week, we have picked two standout games for you to check out — RC Lens v Lyons, and Nantes v PSG. Both games are on Saturday, and we will discuss the latest match odds.

RC Lens snap losing streak against Bordeaux

There may well have been a few alarm bells in the RC Lens camp in recent weeks. After a run of three defeats on the trot, RC Lens got back to winning ways with a 3-2 win at home to Bordeaux last weekend. However, it was far from easy!

Having raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Gael Kakuta, and Seko Fofana, Bordeaux replied with two goals. However, Lens clung onto the lead and held out for all three points. The win leaves them in eighth position, just five points off Strasbourg, who are fourth, and in possession of a Europa League place.

Seko Fofana and Arnaud Kalimuendo could hold key to top-four spot for RC Lens

As mentioned, Fofana and Kalimuendo played a big role in Lens’ nerve-jangling win over Bordeaux. The pair were both on the score sheet and, between them, they have netted 14 times in France’s top flight this season. Their form could prove to be the difference between whether Lens are turning out in the Europa League or not.

Lyon’s mini revival in Ligue 1 continues

It has been a rather mixed campaign to date from Lyon. There has been some swashbuckling football thrown in with some very dismal results. Nevertheless, they cruised to a 2-0 victory over Nice last weekend, which was a bit of a surprise, and they are now just five points off Nice, who are third.

Paris Saint-Germain continue to tick the games off in title pursuit

PSG know they can’t be complacent and look too far ahead. But two-thirds of the way through the season they find themselves 13 points clear at the top of the table. A 1-0 victory at home against Rennes was followed by a 1-0 win at home against Real Madrid in midweek. This latter was the first leg of their Round of 16 Champions League tie.

Kylian Mbappe continues to tear things up for PSG

Kylian Mbappe has continued to shine for PSG this season, and his figures have been excellent. A late winner against Real Madrid took his tally to 22 goals for club and country, and he has looked on fire. It has been a far cry from last summer, where he toiled at times for France at the European Championships.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi is still trying to find his best form for PSG, and things haven’t quite transpired the way he would have hoped. Nevertheless, the Argentine metronome is looking likely to add a Ligue 1 title to his ever bulging trophy cabinet in his debut season in France. It’s not all that bad then!

Meanwhile, Nantes will be hoping they can seal a top-half finish. Currently, they are in ninth position, and there are just four points separating them from Brest, who are in 12th. With just one defeat in their past five matches in all competitions, Nantes appear to be in good shape.

Nantes v Paris Saint-Germain: Unlocking the vault on past encounters

PSG have rarely slipped up, and they have been almost immaculate in most areas of their game this season. They will be targeting a league double over Nantes. When the sides last squared off back in November at the Parc des Princes, PSG ran out comfortable 3-1 winners.

On that day, Mbappe and Messi were on target, and Randal Kolo Muani’s effort proved to be a mere consolation for Nantes. PSG won’t want to let up in their pursuit of the title, and it could be a long evening for Nantes!
