Ligue 1 23/01/22: Montpellier host Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain entertain Reims

Paris Saint-Germain are doing their best to gallop away with the title. While the others are doing their best to stay in touch. In this preview, we have two games to get your teeth stuck into on Sunday — PSG v Reims, and Montpellier v Monaco. We will also have the latest match odds, so keep reading.

Paris Saint-Germain continue to make serene progress towards the title

PSG have been imperious for large chunks of the season. They continued their serene progress towards the title last weekend with a comfortable 2-0 win over Brest. Kylian Mbappe and Thilo Kehrer popped up with the goals to give PSG their 15th win in France’s top flight this season.

As things stand, PSG have an 11-point cushion at the top of the table, so plenty of breathing space for now. Of course, Mauricio Pochettino won’t allow complacency to creep into the camp. But they will be confident of racking up more points against Reims.

Kylian Mbappe clocks up another special landmark for PSG

Mbappe has been in fine form over the past few months. He scored a cracking goal against Brest to take his tally to double figures in Ligue 1 this season. More significantly, his strike against Brest was his 70th goal for the club in competitive matches, and he has become the fifth PSG player to do so.

PSG ready to make move for Zinedine Zidane swoop over Mauricio Pochettino fears

There has been growing speculation that Pochettino could take charge of Manchester United this season. And now it seems, according to reports, United have been in regular contact with the Argentine tactician. So PSG are preparing for life after Pochettino by lining up a move for Zinedine Zidane.

Reims eager to get back to winning ways

For Reims, they enjoyed a mini-revival at the start of the month. However, they are without a win in their last four matches. And although they are seven points clear of the drop zone in 14th spot, they could easily be sucked into a relegation battle if they aren’t careful.

Montpellier desperate to bounce back after heavy defeat to Strasbourg

Until their 3-1 defeat away to Strasbourg last weekend, Montpellier were in a rich vein of form, reeling off six wins on the bounce. But against Strasbourg, they were hit by three late blows. Montpellier had taken the lead in the 11th minute through Florent Mollet. However, the game was turned on its head after Sepe Elye Wahi was dismissed in the 66th minute.

Strasbourg then struck three times in the space of nine minutes to take the game away from Montpellier. Majeed Waris brought Strasbourg on to level terms before Adrien Thomasson and Kevin Gameiro sealed the win for the hosts. Montpellier can’t afford to be so naive against a resurgent Monaco.

Meanwhile, Monaco are harbouring hopes of a top-three finish and, with it, a Champions League berth. As things stand, Monaco are fifth in the table, and they are four points off the top three.

Montpellier v Monaco: A look back on past encounters

Monaco’s trip to Montpellier will be crucial as the race for the top-three intensifies. This will be an intriguing clash, and the head-to-head record can often be a good gauge of how things may unfold. Judging by their last meeting, Monaco will be relishing getting on the road.

Back in October, Monaco ran out 3-1 winners, and so they will be looking to complete a league double over Montpellier. On that day, Monaco were 3-0 up within the hour mark, and although Teji Savanier pulled one back for Montpellier, it proved to be a mere consolation goal. Monaco could claim all three points once again.
