Serie A Preview

Serie A 12-13/01/2022: Napoli, Inter Milan, Atalanta and Juventus all in action on pivotal weekend

There is never a dull moment in Serie A! Inter Milan’s defeat to crosstown rivals AC Milan blew the title race wide open. It looks set to be another colossal weekend in Italy’s top flight, with the top 5 all in action. We will look ahead to Napoli v Inter Milan, and Atalanta v Juventus, and check in on the latest match odds.

Inter Milan left reeling by AC Milan’s late comeback

Inter Milan looked to have been on course for a monumental win over AC Milan when Ivan Perisic gave them the lead. However, Inter were undone by a dramatic late double from Olivier Giroud, which saw the Rossoneri snatch all three points and shift the momentum in the title race.

The defeat was only Inter’s second of the campaign, but it is now a three-horse title race. You could throw a blanket over the top three teams, with just one point separating them. You imagine the Inter camp will have been left deflated, and the onus will be on them to bounce back on Saturday evening.

Simone Inzaghi left puzzled after Inter Milan’s derby blues

Simone Inzaghi was left rather puzzled after Inter’s defeat. The stats seemed to suggest Inter created more goal-scoring opportunities, but they couldn’t capitalise on their chances. When asked for his thoughts after the game, Inzaghi said: “We know how important the derby is. We lost in undeserved fashion, but that’s football.”

Inter handed boost after Joaquin Correa targets return to action against Liverpool

This month is critical for Inter, and with some tough games on the horizon, they need a fully fit squad. It is thought that Joaquin Correa – who has been suffering from a hamstring problem – could return to action for the first leg of Inter’s last 16 Champions League tie a week on Wednesday.

Napoli have the bit between their teeth

Napoli have been in fine form recently, recording three wins on the trot. They have lost only once in their past seven matches in all competitions. In their previous three Serie A outings, they conceded just once, and a 2-0 win over Venezia last weekend leaves them in the thick of the title race – it is an exciting time to be a Napoli fan!

Juventus move into the top four

Over the past few weeks, Juventus have been making all the right noises. A 2-0 win at home over Verona saw them surge into the top four, and they have remained unbeaten since November. There has certainly been more attacking verve from the Bianconeri, who look a different prospect to the Juve of the first half of the season.

There have been some changes too over the past week, with Aaron Ramsey loaned out to the Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers for the rest of the campaign, while Dusan Vlahovic joined Juve from Fiorentina. Speaking after his switch, he said: “I am ready to give my all for this glorious club to reach its objectives.”

Meanwhile, Atalanta will be looking to get back to winning ways following a 2-1 defeat at home to Cagliari last weekend. Although Atalanta got themselves back on level terms thanks to Jose Luis Palomino, a Juan Musso red card meant it was going to be difficult for them to come away with anything.

Atalanta v Juventus: A look back on past encounters

At the moment, just two points separate Juventus in fourth, and Atalanta in fifth in Serie A. However, Atalanta will have fond memories of the last time they faced Juve back in November. On that day, Atalanta came away with a 1-0 win thanks to a first-half strike from Duvan Zapata.

This is a must-win game for both sides if they want to finish in the top four. Clashes between these two sides have always been quite tight, and it might just be a moment of magic that wins it. If push comes to shove, Atalanta could nick all three points.
