Serie A: Inter Milan and AC Milan both in action as title race nears conclusion

It’s the final stretch of the Serie A season, and this weekend’s games will be worth watching. Inter Milan could take another step towards the title with victory at home to Cagliari on Sunday morning. However, on Saturday, AC Milan will hope to delay Inter’s title party with victory away to Parma.

AC Milan looking to keep faint title hopes alive

As things stand, AC Milan can still mathematically win the title. Crosstown rivals Inter have a handsome 11-point cushion with nine games left to play, but they are not over the line yet. Milan needed a late Jens Hauge equaliser to rescue a point at home to Sampdoria last weekend to spare their blushes.

On Saturday, Milan could trim Inter’s lead at the top of the table to eight points with victory against Parma. However, Milan have already lost five games this term, and they can’t afford any more slip ups otherwise the Scudetto will be heading to the blue half of the city.

Parma battling to stave off relegation

For Parma, there’s plenty for them to play for. They will be battling to preserve their Serie A status. Currently, they are 19th in the table, having picked up 20 points from their 29 games to date. Parma are four points adrift of safety, but Torino could well be sucked into a relegation dogfight if they’re not careful.

Parma have tough run coming up

Although they face fellow relegation rivals Cagliari after they take on Milan, the Cagliari fixture is sandwiched in between the Milan and Juventus games. Parma won’t be expected to take anything from either Milan or Juventus, however they can’t surrender and allow themselves to be rolled over.

Napoli still harbouring Champions League ambitions

While it seems from the outset that the title race is petering out, the race to finish in the top four and claim a Champions League berth is still open. Napoli are currently occupying fifth spot in Serie A, and they are just two points adrift of fourth-placed Atalanta.

Napoli desperate to respond after Juventus loss

While Napoli are still in the hunt for a Champions League spot, they have had the most defeats of any of the other sides in the top six (nine). The latest one against Juve will have hurt. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 13th minute for the Old Lady before Paulo Dybala doubled Juve’s lead with 73 minutes on the clock.

Napoli pulled one back in injury time through Lorenzo Insigne in injury time, but hopefully this defeat won’t derail the rest of their campaign. Meanwhile, the full squad underwent testing for COVID-19, but all the tests in the latest round were negative.

Napoli, however, still have some defensive injury worries going into the game against Sampdoria. Amir Rrahmani has been out with a muscular problem, while Kostas Manolas is trying to work his way back to full fitness. Gennaro Gattuso may have to reshuffle his back four.

While Sampdoria will see this fixture as a bit of a dead rubber as they have little to play for, the same can’t be said for Napoli. And Napoli have fared well against Sampdoria in past Serie A encounters. Of the 41 Italian top-flight clashes between these two sides, Napoli have prevailed on 22 occasions.

And, if we are going to go by the recent meetings, things bode well for Napoli. Indeed, they have won each of the past four matches, scoring nine times and conceding just three goals over that period. Napoli have the firepower to make it an uncomfortable afternoon for Sampdoria and we can’t wait for this clash!
