Serie A preview

Serie A: Juventus and Inter Milan both in action on the same day

There will be plenty to look forward to on Sunday in Serie A. While the title appears to be heading to the blue half of Milan, Juventus and AC Milan will want to delay the celebrations. We will run the rule over Atalanta v Juventus, and Napoli v Inter Milan. We’ll also provide the latest odds, and discuss the main talking points.

Juventus looking to finish season on a high

While their title defence didn’t go according to plan, Juventus have been an indomitable force of Italian football for the past decade. Although it will pain to see Inter Milan charge towards the Scudetto, Juventus will want to lay down a marker in the next few games. At present, they are 12 points adrift of Inter in third spot.

However, they are just three points clear of Napoli who are sitting just outside the Champions League positions in fifth place. Unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo is Serie A’s top scorer with 25 goals to his name this term. And he will be eager to add to his tally against Atalanta on Sunday afternoon.

Juventus learning how to make life easier for themselves

During the season, Juventus have made things difficult for themselves. They have often been pegged back in matches, and not been clinical enough. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by Juve boss Andrea Pirlo, who said: “Unfortunately, we’ve made things difficult for ourselves in several games, and that’s cost us points along the way.” Juventus can’t afford to be sloppy against Atalanta.

Atalanta building momentum at just the right time

Atalanta have been a surprise package for the past few seasons. However, they are on course for a top-four spot. And they have been in fine fettle. Four wins on the trot in Italy’s top flight has given Atalanta serious momentum. However, they will have to breach a Juve defence that has only conceded 27 goals this season, and recently welcomed back Leonardo Bonucci to action.

Atalanta v Juventus: A look back at past clashes

Juventus boasts a strong record against most Serie A teams, and the same applies for matches against Atalanta. Indeed, Sunday’s clash will represent the 48th meeting in Italy’s top flight between these two sides. However, the last two meetings ended in draws. Remo Freuler rescued a point when they met at the Allianz Stadium earlier this term.

Inter Milan inching ever closer to the title

Inter have barely put a foot wrong this term, and they have suffered defeat in just two of their 30 Serie A matches. They hope to take another step towards the title with victory over Napoli.

Inter have been in a rich vein of form, clocking up nine wins on the trot. They have learned how to do things the hard way with the 1-0 victory over Cagliari being a case in point. A Matteo Darmian strike 13 minutes from time proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Inter are clearly riding the crest of a wave, and while they have an 11-point cushion at the top of Serie A, Antonio Conte won’t let complacency creep in. And former Inter star Nicola Berti believes his former employers have to press home their advantage against Napoli. He said: “Beating a team like Napoli would be another sign of just how strong this team is.”

Napoli v Inter: How past matches have unfolded

For Inter, a trip to Napoli will be a serious test of their title credentials. However, as far as the head-to-head record goes, Inter come out on top. Sunday evening’s clash will be the 46th meeting between these two sides. Inter have won on 19 occasions, and they tasted victory earlier this term when they won 1-0 at the San Siro.

Romelu Lukaku grabbed the only goal of the game from the penalty spot with 17 minutes remaining of normal time, while Lorenzo Insigne was sent off for the visitors. Inter will fancy their chances of completing the double over Inter, however Insigne is a slippery customer, and he has netted 15 times in Serie A this term.
