Finland vs Russia – Euro 2020 Betting Tips

The Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg, Russia hosts Finland and Russia in the first of the 2nd round matches of the Euro 2020. The match happens on the 16th of June 2021 Wednesday

at 18:30 IST. Finland high on confidence after their historic win in Copenhagen while Russia at the opposite end of the spectrum after their loss against Belgium. This game surely holds a lot of significance within the group.

Finland Form and Team News

Finland played their first game in any major competition final on Saturday against Denmark in

Copenhagen, went on to win that game by a slender margin of one goal to nil, unfortunately, that win could well be overshadowed by some tragic turn of events unfolded on the pitch. Nonetheless, Finland along with the rest of the world be happy with how it finally ended without any feared extreme consequences. Finland was the second team to qualify for the championships from group J with 18 points secured after playing ten matches. They won six and lost four games in the process. They were able to produce results in all ten games with zero draws to their name. Italy played out their best football to finish as the toppers of the group winning all the ten games they were part of. They are starting to hope to upstage a comeback of sorts while in the championship and cause some upsets along the way.

Coach Markku Kanerva was as concerned as the whole world during the last match but still found time to regroup and eventually return victorious. Goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky was by far

the best Finland player in the last game with as many as six saves to his name. Pohjanpalo would etch his name into the history books for his antics at Copenhagen scoring the all-important goal to secure the win against Denmark. The defence was kept busy with the series of attacks from the Danish players all through the match, but still, they managed to keep a clean slate going into

the second round games.

Russia Form and Team News

Russia were coming into the competition high on hopes after the brilliant showing in the last World Cup. But it was quickly set to rest by the raging Belgians who thrashed them from all sides. Russia went on to lose the game three goals to nil and are now in a spot of bother. They now need to not just win the rest of the group games while also have to make sure they get big wins just to be sure of finishing with a positive GD in case the qualification gets into that stage. Russia had a brilliant set of Qualification matches where they finished second in the group to just the Belgium team who finished the group toppers. They were part of Group I and in the ten games played, Russia managed to win eight of those while losing to just Belgium in both home and away matches. They also scored as many as 33 goals in the process while conceding just seven goals. They are playing confident Finland in the second round opener on Wednesday.

Coach Stanislav Cherchesov would’ve been happy seeing his teams performance in the

qualification rounds but their opening game should act as an eye-opener and the headman should get his tactics straight from here on. Captain Dzyuba was one of the very few players who had a decent last game. Goalkeeper Shunin was mediocre but most of the errors did come from the central defence and the middle of the park where they could’ve probably done a bit better which would’ve reduced the deficit to a certain extent.

Odds by Casumo

Russia are favourites to win according to the Casumo Sportsbook. They are placed at 1.62 odds while Russia is placed at 6.10. The odds for a draw is 3.75.

Our Tipster’s Angle

Russia are favourites to win this game given the odds, but Finland can’t be counted out before the game as well. They are on the back of a win even though it came after something that nobody should ever experience anywhere let alone a football field. Russia were thrashed by Lukaku and co. handing them a 3-0 defeat in the opening game, these two teams head to head record favour Russia big time. So we can say Russia will have their noses ahead given their reputation and head to head record.

Tip 1: Asian Lines Total Goals over 2.25

Russia and Finland have played head to head on two occasions, the last of which came a long way back in 2009, both of those games had Russia winning as mentioned above and the total

goals in both games were over 2.25. Russia individually too in the last eight matches have seen six matches where the above was satisfied. In the away games, Russia in the last five matches have had four matches to prove the same. While in the case of Finland, they are very much a defensive unit, but after what happened in Copenhagen on Saturday, leaving aside the unfortunate turn of events, Finland still managed to win it, which will give them the confidence going forward, four of their last eight matches have seen over 2.25 goals in total. This is the reason why the match between Russia and Finland would have over 2.25 goals in total. The odds for Asian Line Total Goals over 2.25 according to the Casumo Sportsbook is 2.02.

Tip 2: Finland Total Goals over 0.5

Russia in the last eight matches have conceded over 0.5 goals to their opponents in seven matches of those. While they also are carrying a 100% record of doing so in all of

their last five away matches. Finland on the other hand, being on the defensive unit they are have still been able to get as many as eight matches in the last ten across competitions, where they have been able to score over 0.5 goals. Three of their last four home matches have also seen them scoring the above and maintaining the record. Also considering they still were able to convert whatever little chances that came into a goal against a depleted but defensively tight Denmark, Russia being the aggressive team will probably open up spaces for the Finland attack to go about scoring the above or more. According to the Casumo Sportsbook, the odds for Finland Total Goals over 0.5 is 1.87.

Conclusion

Finland have achieved what many teams haven’t in the recent past to have come into a major

competition for the first time and win the first game and Russia losing quite comprehensively against the Belgians, this game comes with a lot of importance to either team given a win or loss could make the situation tricky from here on. Summarising on a couple of bets from above:

  1. Asian Lines Total goals over 2.25 @ 2.02
  2. Finland Total goals over 0.5 @ 1.87
