Hungary vs Portugal – Euro 2020 Betting Tips

Hungary are hosting Portugal in Ferenc Puskas in Budapest, Hungary on the 15th of June 2021 at 21:30 IST. The Champions are taking the field for the first time in the championship to start their quest for retaining it while Hungary would hope to dent it with a win here.

Hungary Form and Team News

Hungary were one of the very few teams in Europe to have qualified for the EURO this year even with a fourth-place finish in the qualification round. They were part of a very tricky Group E with the likes of Croatia, Wales, Slovakia, and Azerbaijan making up the rest. Hungary after the eight games played won four games while losing four games as well. They finished with 12 points, They scored lesser goals than what they conceded and just because they managed to reach the cutoff points tally, they were eligible for another set of knockout qualification matches. They faced Iceland here and went on to win the tie which prompted an entry into EURO 2020. In the last ten matches, Hungary are yet to lose a single game while also managing to win six games and drawing the rest four games. They can continue to upset some teams in the championship if they continue this form and their real test begins on Tuesday when they’ll face the Champions Portugal in the first game.

Marco Rossi, the coach has shown a tremendous amount of application with this team in tricky times, they are playing the elite tournament only for the second time in their history also because of some of the decisions taken by Rossi. Hungary are in the best possible position going into the championship having not lost a single in the last ten they have played and Rossi would need to keep the momentum going. Szalai, Nikolics, Holender, Varga and Schon are the forwards. Rolland Sallai, Adam Nagy, Kleinheiser,  Kevin Varga and Siger would be in the midfield, Szalai,  Orban, Lang, Lovrencsics, Kecskes, and co in defence with Gulacsi probably on goal.

Portugal Form and Team News

The last edition Champions after the epic Final against France which saw the great Cr7 getting injured and Eder breaking the jinx in the last moments of the game are opening their campaign in this year’s EURO against Hungary away on Tuesday. In the Qualification rounds, Portugal were part of Group B and finished as the second-best team in the group with Ukraine managing to finish first. After the eight games played, Portugal won five while losing one and drawing the two other games. They were clinical in the campaign but let slip one game which in turn made them second in the group. In the last ten matches, they have managed to win six games while losing just one game. They also drew three games in the process. Portugal are favourites to win the cup this time with the sort of team they have. They just need to get things going in the right direction and a win against Hungary in the first match would be the best way forward for the Christiano Ronaldo led side.

Fernando Santos as coach of the Portugal national football team has been there through the transition phases while also guiding them to the coveted EURO title in 2016. He has seen enough of this team and knows in and out of the players to make decisions that will have to start showing effect sooner than later. Rui Patricio was the unsung hero of that Final game in 2016, he is expected to keep goals this season as well. In defence, they have Cancelo, Semedo, Dias and Pepe who could be the potential men covering the area. Bruno, Bernado Silva, Sanches, Neves and Guedes are in the midfield. Felix, Jota, Andre Silva, Goncalves along with their Captain Leader Legend Christiano Ronaldo are expected to fill the forward line.

Our Tipster’s Angle

The current Champions are favorites to win this match given their superior head to head record against Hungary where they are yet to lose a match in any of the competitions. Portugal has won as many as six games playing against Hungary while drawing one game. Hungary would need to pick up their game to win this and open their account in terms of wins in all competitions.

Tip 1: Total Goals over 2.5

Portugal have been part of some high-scoring matches off-late. They have had three games in the last four matches where the total goal count was over 2.5. All of their last three away games have also seen over 2.5 goals in total. Hungary on the other hand have also been involved in some high-scoring matches. Three of the last five matches have seen over 2.5 goals in total. Coming to the head to head stat, three of the last four matches between the two sides have seen over 2.5 goals in total. With the number of attackers both the sides possess it’s quite likely this match could well have over 2.5 goals in total. The odds for the total goals to be over 2.5 according to the Casumo Sportsbook is 1.96.

Tip 2: Both teams to score

Both teams have been involved in several games recently where both teams have scored scenarios. Both defences being shaky is evident with that stat, but also what’s to be noted is that the strikers have been on point and netting in goals no matter what be the opposition which makes for a spectacular watch. Three of the last six games of Portugal across competitions have seen the above condition satisfied. Three of the last four away games have also been the same. Two of the last four head to head matches between the two sides have seen both teams scoring. So it’s likely that both Hungary and Portugal get on the scoresheet. According to the Casumo Sportsbook, the odds for both teams to score is 2.08.

Conclusion

Both teams have a streak to keep, both are on unbeaten runs, while a win for either would bring an end to that, Portugal would hope to start the campaign with nothing less than a win given they are part of a potential ‘Group of Death’ and any slip-ups could well prove fatal for all four teams. Summarising on a couple of bets from above:

  1. Total goals over 2.5 @ 1.96
  2. Both teams to score @ 2.08
