IPL 2022 Odds

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is by far the most glamorous and the biggest franchise T20 tournament in cricket. It is run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and has been held every year since its inaugural season in 2008.

With a huge Bollywood influence and money deals running into billions, the IPL sets such a glitzy and cash-rich stage that it attracts the absolute cream of world cricket. And of course, when the ingredients are world class and the recipe is of the master chef, the final product is unlike anything else offered anywhere.

To make it to the IPL is considered by many cricketers their professional dream as the entire cricketing world’s eyes are fixated on this tournament as soon as it begins. It is then not surprising that the IPL is insanely popular in the online cricket betting fraternity as well and one of the main products offered by Casumo.

Past IPL Tournaments

So far, 14 events of the IPL are in the books. The inaugural edition of the tournament way back in 2008 was won by Rajasthan Royals, who beat Chennai Super Kings in the final.

The now-defunct Deccan Chargers won the title in 2009 with a win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. Chennai Super Kings then won back-to-back titles, thanks to wins over Mumbai Indians in the 2010 final and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final next year. 

Kolkata Knight Riders won two IPL titles – once in 2012 and the other in 2014. Sandwiched in between was Mumbai India’s first triumph in 2013. Mumbai Indians won their second title in 2015 before Sunrisers Hyderabad won their sole title in 2016. Mumbai dominated the four years between 2017 and 2020, winning three titles, with the only exception being 2018 when Chennai Super Kings were the champions. The Super Kings also won last year’s tournament by beating Kolkata in the final, making them the defending champions for the 2022 tournament.

This Year’s IPL

The 15th season of the IPL is set to kick off on March 26 and will conclude more than two months later on May 29. The extraordinary length of the tournament is due to the fact that it will be the first time that the tournament will have 10 participants, with Gujarat Titans and Lucknow SuperGiants being the two new additions.

Since the IPL 2022 will be a 10-team tournament, it would have been extremely difficult to follow the previous format that saw all teams lumped together in one giant division where everyone played all other teams twice.

Therefore, the 10 teams have been divided into two groups of five, with each team facing the four members of its own group twice, four members of the other group once, and a select team from the other group twice. This way, the group stage fixture of each team has been restricted to 14, just like the last time. 

While the teams will be divided into two groups, the points table will be a consolidated one featuring all 10 teams. At the end of the group fixtures, the top four will advance to the playoffs where the traditional IPL-style format will be followed.

Winner Odds

The team most likely to win IPL 2022 are the Mumbai Indians. They have the shortest odds assigned to them at 5.50. They are of course the side with the most titles (5) and so their favourites status is justified. 

Delhi Capitals have recruited shrewdly through the mega auction and so they are the second favourites to win their maiden title with odds of 6.50. Royal Challengers Bangalore also look a very strong unit and so the bookies have assigned odds of 7.0 to them. Punjab Kings, who have not made the playoffs since 2014, are priced at a very respectable 7.50 to win it all. 

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings, perhaps due to their key players’ advancing years, are surprisingly only the fifth-favourites odds-wise. They are priced at 9.0 to repeat.

The odds for Rajasthan Royals are also 9.0, while newcomers Gujarat Titans, who did very well in the mega auction, are priced at 10.0.

Last year’s losing finalists Kolkata Knight Riders are not thought of much by the oddsmakers, who are offering a whopping pay out of 11.0 on them to win it all.

The teams least likely to win IPL 2022 are the other expansion franchise, Lucknow SuperGiants and last year’s worst team, Sunrisers Hyderabad. Both the teams come with odds of 13.0.

Other Odds

The betting market for the teams to reach the final is also already available. As expected, Mumbai Indians have the shortest odds (3.40) in this race, followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (3.75) and Delhi Capitals (4.33).

Furthermore, with the tournament set to kick off in a few days’ time, the odds for the first five fixtures are also out. On the opening night, Chennai Super Kings (1.83) will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (1.91) in a repeat of last year’s final.
