Portugal vs France – Euro 2020 Betting Tips

Portugal is hosting France in Ferenc Puskas in Budapest, Portugal on the 24th of June 2021 at 00:30 IST. Portugal and France were given a reality check after the last games against Germany and Hungary respectively. Both teams are in desperate search of redemption in terms of forms which has been seriously lacking in both.

France Form and Team News

France came back to draw the last game against Hungary but were quite disappointing to say nonetheless, with the sort of team they have. The attackers have put their head down and start scoring from hereon. France were outplayed by the Germans with respect to the chances created and other aspects of the first game, but still, the World cup winners managed to find the winner in their opening fixture. Now that the Germans are past them, France should be wary of a certain Portugal in the last league game. The French need to win to assure themselves a qualification. The World Cup holders are continuing their quest for a EURO title which they narrowly missed in an epic final in 2016 at the hands of France against neighbours Portugal as part of the understandably most talked about Group in the competition ‘Group F’ with Portugal and fellow rivals Germany too in the mix. France in the qualification rounds were part of Group H where they finished as the number one side with Turkey finishing a close second in the race. France are widely tipped to go one better this time around and win the title, usually, the competition heats up for all teams with the knockouts starting, but teams in Group F are going to face the heat right from the start.

Didier Deschamps has had the luxury of having to coach some of the best players in the world that he can ask for. He made merry with them in the World Cup 2018 and won the title to create a legacy for his own. He now has the objective of winning the title that eluded them last time around. Even with all the talk surrounding Benzema and the famed attack of France, he has not been able to produce anything substantial so far. The attack line needs to step up while the midfield has to keep the passes rolling.

Portugal Form and Team News

Portugal like in the first game looked a bit lose and if Hungary were not able to capitalise on it then, Germany in the second game took full toll of it and handed them the worst defeat in their EURO cup history for conceding the highest number of goals. Portugal needs to strap up and cannot let loose of this anymore from here on if they are to have any chance to defend their title. Portugal for most of the first game to be precise, for 80 minutes of the last game against Portugal looked like a team lost for ideas until a huge turn of events after that which lead to a 3-0 smashing at the end. In the Qualification rounds, Portugal were part of Group B and finished as the second-best team in the group with Ukraine managing to finish first. After the eight games played, Portugal won five while losing one and drawing the two other games. They were clinical in the campaign but let slip one game which in turn made them second in the group. In the last ten matches, they have managed to win seven games while losing just one game. They also drew two games in the process. Portugal are favourites to win the cup this time with the sort of team they have.

Fernando Santos as coach of the Portugal national football team has been there through the transition phases while also guiding them to the coveted EURO title in 2016. He has seen enough of this team and knows in and out of the players to make decisions that will have to start showing effect sooner than later. Everyone except the mercurial Ronaldo had an off game last against Germany. The defence was made to look silly with the series of attacks from the German forwards and flanks.

Our Tipster’s Angle

The current World Cup Champions are favourites to win this match given their superior head to head record against Portugal where they are yet to lose two matches while winning on six occasions. France are also the better team on paper while Portugal seems a bit lost in this championship even though they won against Hungary, they did not turn up what they are used to in the past which could be something France would capitalise on.

Tip 1: France to Win

France even though for the tough draw in the last game, have not still been beaten even once in the last nine matches which shows the dominance by the world champions. They are expected to make a comeback against the Portugal side in the last league game. Portugal on the other hand were in a way quite lucky in the first game where they were lagging behind for 85 per cent time and only in the last few minutes that they managed to score goals to win against a lowly ranked Hungary side. The last game showed how Portugal could be opened up and can be beaten, Germany showed that brilliantly. France here have a dominant head to head stat as well going into this game where they have lost just once against the Portuguese in history. So given all of this, France can be expected to win this game. According to the Casumo Sportsbook, the odds for France to win is 2.25.

Tip 2: Total Goals under 2.5

France have not been scoring many goals recently even with the likes of their famed attack line in place. Mbappe and co. have failed to score much, the re-entry of Benzema too isn’t reaping full rewards as they would’ve wished for. Seven of their last ten matches across competitions have all seen under 2.5 goals scored by both teams combined. While playing away, all four of their last four matches have also been the same. The head to head between the two sides have also had all four of their last four matches where the total goals were under 2.5. While playing with Portugal as host, the head to head record stays the same as above. Portugal on the other hand at home, have had two of the last four where the condition was satisfied. So it’s quite likely that the total goals will be under 2.5. The odds for the same according to the Casumo Sportsbook is 1.63.

Conclusion

France could well make a comeback of sorts in this match given the Portugal defence will be under tremendous pressure after the drubbing at the hands of Germany in the last game, the winner will finish in the top two positions of the points table. Summarising on a couple of bets from above:

  1.     France to win @2.25
  2.     Total goals under 2.5 @ 1.63
