Cheese lovers, we have entered the Year of the Rat

Rats!

People say all sorts of things. For example, that those born under the sign of the Rat tend to be optimistic and energetic. We won’t confirm or deny. What we can do, is give you a little more insight into this ancient Chinese tradition. And have a close-up look at our Chinese New Year-themed video slot, that too.

History first

The Chinese calendar, known as Sheng Xiao, is represented by 12 animals, each of which is said to somehow affect your fortune for the year. These 12 animals are the pig, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and rat. The Rat is the first in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac.

And 2020 happens to be the year of the Rat. It has characteristics of an animal with spirit, wit, alertness, delicacy, flexibility and vitality. But how did all this tradition come to be?

There are several variations of the original story, but all involve the same guy who called himself the Jade Emperor. The most popular theory is that he brought together 12 animals and made them race against each other. He then created the calendar according to how each animal finished this race. According to one myth, Rat tricked Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first in the order of things. Sneaky little thing!

The zodiac cycle repeats every 12 years and is calculated according to the Chinese lunar calendar.

Born in the year of the Rat?

If your sign is the Rat, you might be interested to know that according to ancient Chinese tradition, people born in this year tend to be optimistic and energetic. They are sensitive to other’s emotions and their personality is kind, but due to a lack of communication, their words may seem impolite and rude.

In Chinese culture, the Rat is ‘yang’ (that’s the male part of yin and yang) and represents the beginning of a new day. Rat and Ox complement and help each other in both work and life. Couples that are formed from Rat and either Dragon or Monkey will be able to understand each other well, and enjoy success together. Apparently Rats shouldn’t share a cheese toasty with Horses, Goats or Rabbits.

Some Rat Zodiac Personalities include: George Washington, John F. Kennedy, Wolfgang Mozart, William Shakespeare, Charlotte Bronte, Prince Harry, Prince Charles, Ben Affleck, Diego Armando Maradona, Zinedine.Yazid.Zidane, Du Fu (a famous Chinese poet in the Tang Dynasty 618 – 907), Zhuangzi (an influential Chinese Taoist philosopher in the Warring States Period 475 – 221 BC)
