Serie A weekly preview: Inter impressive!

Serie A: Impressive Inter are now 10 points clear

We have another round of Serie A fixtures to look forward to this week. While Inter Milan appear to be in control of their destiny as far as the Scudetto is concerned, AC Milan are still hopeful. We preview Inter Milan v Verona on Sunday, and Lazio v AC Milan on Monday, and check in on the odds for these games.

Inter Milan fall short in quest of perfect 10 against Napoli

Inter have left their rivals biting the dust. However, they were unable to clinch their 10th Serie A win on the trot, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Napoli last weekend. Antonio Conte’s charges created plenty of chances and hit the woodwork twice, but they are still nine points clear at the top and close to sealing their first Scudetto since 2010.

After initially struggling to force his way into Conte’s plans, Christian Eriksen has been a regular starter in recent weeks. Eriksen popped up with a second-half equalizer to keep Inter’s unbeaten run going, and Conte was full of praise for the Danish midfielder. He said: “Christian has some great attributes, and he’s increasing his levels of aggression and intensity. This is helping us a lot.”

European Super League controversy has cast shadow over Serie A

While Inter waltz their way to the title and will feel confident against Verona, the European Super League story has dominated events in Europe this week. Both Inter and AC Milan had also signed up and with the ‘Big Six’ Premier League clubs pulling out, they need to work hard to restore their reputations with their own fans who were left fuming

Verona hoping to consolidate top 10 spot

Last season, Verona finished ninth in Serie A. While that is where they currently find themselves, they will look to improve that. Sassuolo are eighth, five points ahead of Verona, but Verona have played one game more. While the San Siro is notoriously difficult to pick up points, Verona will hope to exact revenge over Inter, who they lost 2-1 to earlier this term.

Verona eager to improve woeful record against Inter

As mentioned, Verona lost 2-1 to Inter earlier this season and their record against Inter in Serie A is dismal. The two sides have faced each other 21 times in Italy’s top flight, and Verona has come out on top once. Their sole victory over the Nerazzurri came back in 1992.

AC Milan rue missed opportunity

Although Inter have one hand on the Scudetto, Milan won’t see it that way. The Rossoneri bottled their chance to close the gap falling to a 2-1 home defeat to Sassuolo last week and they are eager to put things right with six games to play.

One area that Milan have improved in is scoring from set-pieces. They have netted 25 times this term from set-pieces, five more than any other Serie A side.

Lazio still in the mix for top-four finish

Juventus, at the time of writing, are in fourth in Serie A, but there are only four points that separate them and Lazio who occupy the sixth spot. Lazio have built up steam, notching up four straight wins, including an exhilarating 5-3 victory over Benevento last weekend.

However, Milan has a stranglehold on this particular fixture. There have been 61 meetings between Milan and Lazio, Milan prevailing on 28 occasions, while Lazio has claimed victory eight times. Nevertheless, this is a fixture that produces goals. In the past three clashes, there have been at least three goals scored, and when the two sides last met back in December, Milan won 3-2.
