Premier League top four race intensifies in Final Day

The Top 4 race intensifies with 4 games to go

We can’t believe the roller coaster ride the Premier League has taken us on this season. In truth, it’s been mad from the start, with ridiculous early score lines that included Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool and Manchester 1-6 Tottenham.

Yet, those results seem far away and pale in comparison to the chaos that fills the league these days. Last Sunday the aftermath of the failed bid to start a European Super League climaxed as Manchester United fans stormed Old Trafford ahead of the anticipated game against arch-rivals Liverpool.

As the protests intensified, the actions of a few led to the postponement of that fixture, in what was a maximum impact of the protest. Protestors set out to achieve that as a bare minimum as they continue to demand the sale of the club by the Glazer family. We are yet to know the full aftermath of the protests and whether or not Manchester United will be punished by the Premier League, but to force a postponement of a football match is a serious concern for the league. Indeed this was the very first time a Premier League fixture had to be called off due to safety concerns.

Still, we have a top four race to look ahead to this weekend with Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham all in action in a busy weekend.

West Ham need to click again to hit the top 4

The Hammers have been the surprise package this season and we’ve loved their rise to the top section of the Premier League. They are above Spurs and Liverpool in fifth spot but a recent wobble in form almost derailed their epic progress. Their latest outing bore fruit in the shape of three points against Burnley who are always potential banana skins.

Eveton are just typical Everton, aren’t they. All the early promise in the world, a mid season lull and then completely inconsistent form to fizzle out the season. They are in eighth place and to be honest fans should not be too displeased. Carlo Ancelotti is actually building something there, and the owners are physically building something too: a gorgeous new stadium on Bramley Dock. This is a club which has never been relegated from the Premier League, is built on history and a strong community, and is finally looking up to build an even stronger platform for a better future. They’ve got an incredible manager and we can expect big things from the Toffees in the near future.

The immediate future sees the Blues face former manager David Moyes. He spent 11 seasons at Everton where he built solid foundations through consistent, very Everton football. It’s a style we do still see to this very day and that’s the area where Carlo Ancelotti needs to evolve. Everton need to shed their past styles and begin to think bigger.

Of course for Moyes, sentiment won’t play a part. His West Ham will be desperate to win as the promise of European football looms large. We think he’ll get one over against his old club, and are looking at a 2-1 win for the Hammers. This is priced at 15/2 or 8.5 with Casumo. The race for the Top 4 is on!

City can win the league with a win

Just when we thought we had run out of superlatives to describe Manchester City this season they produced that display in the Champions League semi final against PSG. My word that was a lesson in defending. Ruben Diaz was a rock, John Stones played a blinder and Mahrez was magical. It’s now very simple for them. A win this weekend against Chelsea, who were also unbelievable against Real Madrid, will give them the league title.

This is a dress rehearsal for the Champions League final and we expect managers to rotate their squads. City are in a luxurious position here, in that they are fighting for nothing. Thomas Tuchel still needs to guide Chelsea to a top four spot which will not be an easy task.

Both him and Pep Guardiola will use this opportunity to study each other a little closely but not all the cards will be on the table. We’re at the stage of the season where fatigue has settled in  deeply, so the players will do their best to keep some fuel in the tank for the all-important Istanbul date.
