Bundesliga: Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund hoping to enter international break on a high

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both been unstoppable at times this season. With the Bundesliga set to break off once again for international football after this weekend, let’s look ahead to two key fixtures — Bayern v Freiburg, and RB Leipzig v Dortmund. We will also divulge the latest match odds, so check out our thoughts below.

Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski turn in another five-star display for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have been awesome for large parts of this campaign. Although they suffered a shock to the system when they were demolished 5-0 by Borussia Monchengladbach in the German Cup, Bayern eviscerated that memory with a 5-2 win over Union Berlin last weekend. It was the third straight Bundesliga game that Bayern had scored at least four goals.

Against Union, Bayern sliced through their opponents like a knife through butter. Thomas Muller had a hand in four goals, and he has notched up a league-high of seven assists. While Robert Lewandowski grabbed a double on his 360th Bundesliga appearance to take his tally to 289 career goals in Germany’s top flight. It set Bayern nicely up for a big week ahead.

Julian Nagelsmann set to return to dugout for Bayern’s Champions League clash against Benfica

Julian Nagelsmann has been forced to watch Bayern’s last four matches from home after testing positive for COVID-19. Although the display against Monchengladbach was insipid, Nagelsmann’s charges have been otherwise in turbo mode. But Bayern will be glad to have Nagelsmann patrolling the touchline once again.

Freiburg continue to fly high after Greuther Furth victory

Freiburg are fast emerging as one of the surprise package of the Bundesliga this season. A 3-1 victory over Greuther Furth last weekend means they are the only undefeated team in Germany’s top flight. Although they are holding their own, as they are third in the table, you imagine their unbeaten record won’t be intact for too much longer.

Bayern Munich v Freiburg: A look back at past encounters

Freiburg faces a tall order trying to contain a free-scoring Bayern Munich. And there may be well a few nerves ahead of a trip to the Allianz Arena, and last season, Freiburg fell to a 2-1 defeat. They thought they had secured a draw thanks to a Nils Petersen strike, but Muller had the last laugh.

Borussia Dortmund looking solid after another shut out against Cologne

The backbone of any title-winning side is a strong defence. And Borussia Dortmund echoed this old football saying with a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Cologne last weekend. Dortmund punished Cologne’s lack of cutting edge, as Thorgan Hazard, and Steffen Tigges supplied the goals to wrap up all three points.

For Tigges, it was his first-ever Bundesliga goal, and he scored with his first touch of the ball. Jude Bellingham also played a key role in the game, as he notched up his third assist of the campaign, and Dortmund are in a good place as they prepare for a trip to Leipzig on Saturday. Before that, they host Ajax in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Leipzig were left frustrated after they missed the chance to move into the top four for the first time this season. A last-gasp equaliser by Tuta for Frankfurt last weekend frustrated Leipzig, who are currently eighth in Germany’s top flight. But before they take on Dortmund, they will be looking to exact revenge against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

RB Leipzig v Borussia Dortmund: Unlocking the vault on past encounters

While Leipzig v Dortmund can be classed as high-scoring affairs, Leipzig will be hoping to turn the tide against the Bumblebees. In each of their past three meetings in all competitions, Dortmund have come out on top. And in the corresponding fixture in the league last season, Dortmund cantered to a 3-1 victory.

Jadon Sancho and an Erling Haaland put Leipzig to the sword. And Dortmund will be hoping to notch up another win over Leipzig. Meanwhile, speculation has abounded that Arsenal are looking to strike a deal for Leipzig playmaker Christopher Nkunku, who has just under three years left to run on his existing deal.
