Ligue 1: 15-16/01/22: Paris Saint-Germain to host Brest, Marseille tackle Lille

While Ligue 1 was short on goals last weekend, there was nearly an upset. Lyon came close to handing Paris Saint-Germain their second defeat of the season, but the French giants mustered a point. We will look ahead to two games taking place this weekend, which sees PSG face Brest, while Marseille host reigning champions Lille. We will also check out the latest odds.

Paris Saint-Germain suffer scare against Lyon

PSG have been formidable for large chunks of the season. However, they came very close to defeat away to Lyon last weekend. The French giants looked to be heading towards their second loss of the season in France’s top flight before Thilo Kehrer rescued a point.

It was the ninth time this season that PSG have conceded the opening goal in a game. But they have lost only one of these, which shows their innate ability to react. As things stand, PSG are still in a very healthy position. They are 11 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table after 20 games.

Marco Verratti provides his thoughts on PSG’s draw

The contest between Lyon and PSG was fiercely competitive. PSG midfielder Marco Verratti thinks the game was a great advertisement for Ligue 1. When asked for his thoughts after the match, he said: “It was a good game, a game that people must have enjoyed as well.”

Paris Saint-Germain hitman Kylian Mbappe in the running for individual accolade

Kylian Mbappe is enjoying a fine season so far, and he was one of the three nominees for Ligue 1’s Player of the Month for December. Last month, Mbappe struck four times in all competitions, and he has been a constant menace. He will certainly give Brest a headache on Saturday evening with his probing runs!

Brest in need of inspiration ahead of PSG test

While Brest doesn’t look in danger of going down, there is a concern that their season could fizzle out. After claiming six wins on the bounce between October and December, they have failed to win any of their past three Ligue 1 matches. Currently, Brest are 13th in the table, with 25 points to their name.

Marseille looking to keep themselves in the mix

While PSG will look to put more distance between themselves and the chasing pack, Marseille will want to keep themselves in the mix and take things down to the wire. They have been in a rich vein of form, as they are unbeaten in their past six matches in all competitions.

Last weekend, they edged out Bordeaux 1-0 thanks to a first-half strike from Cengiz Under. That victory leaves Marseille in third spot in the table, and they are level on points with second-place Nice, with only goal difference separating the two teams.

Meanwhile, Lille’s title defence hasn’t quite gone according to plan. Currently, they are 10th in the table, although they are only three points off the top four. When you factor in that they are unbeaten in Ligue 1 since the end of October, it would be wrong to write them off!

Marseille v Lille: A look back at past encounters

The head-to-head record can often be a good indicator of how matches may unfold. And if you’re in the Lille camp, you may well be relishing a trip to Marseille. In the corresponding fixture earlier this season, Lille ran out 2-0 winners, with Jonathan David grabbing both goals that day.

And in Lille’s previous trip to Marseille last season, they claimed a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw. The Vélodrome can be a hostile place to visit, but Lille will be looking to make up ground on their rivals, and they could pinch victory there on Sunday evening.
