Reading FC: An timely away trip can be healthy

The home fixture against Sheffield United took a solemn turn, and then another twist which left fans saddened. John Fleck’s on-pitch collapse stunned the crowd and we are all extremely relieved he is on the road to recovery. Incidents like this are scary and we’re very grateful to medical staff for their timely interception and help in the critical moment.

The defeat is of secondary importance as we all know life is more than football, and safety is paramount, no matter the situation.

Kicking on from the Sheffield United game is important and Reading next head down to South Wales to face mid-table Swansea. A wee break from England will do the players good, a sense of getting away from what has been a topsy turvy past couple of weeks and playing away can help distance the lads from the previous game and its occurrences.

This away trip comes at the right time, it’s a healthy break and time to regroup and refocus. Swansea will not be easy, as no team is in the Championship. They already dumped Reading out of the EFL Cup with a 3-0 win at the SCL stadium back in August. Last season, nothing could separate the sides in both rounds. A goalless stalemate in round 22, a 2-2 draw in round 44 showed how close these sides were last season.

The league positions this season paint a different picture. Reading are further down the table than expected as the six point deduction comes in place, while Swansea are solid in mid table and ten points separate the sides. The Swans did well to beat Barnsley away 2-0 on Wednesday and they will be looking to push on too with a good home performance against Reading.
