Let’s get cracking!

CASUMO KEY STAT: Trainer Andrew Balding won this race the last time it was run in 2019

CASUMO VERDICT: Just the five runners here but you can probably make a case for them all. Uncle Dick has been placed in the first three in seven of his 10 career starts and can be expected to run his race again. The winning run for Kayfast Warrior came to an end last time at Chepstow, but was only beaten a neck. However, you feel being up another 2lbs here and having a busy spell this month (4 runs), the handicapper might be catching up with him. The Andrew Balding yard do okay here with their runners and have DISCOMATIC entered. This 3 year-old needs to bounce back from a poor run at Southwell in March, but has been gelded since and prior to that run had shown a good level of form He returns on a pound lower mark and Callum Hutchinson can claim a handy 5lbs too. It would be no shock to see him bounce back to form. Graystone and Mark Of Respect make up the five runners and are the both recent winners so are sure to have their supporters too. Of that pair, MARK OF RESPECT is worthy of interest. He’s up 4lbs from that recent win – however, connections are offsetting most of that by booking Tyler Saunders to ride and claim a handy 3lbs.

6:25 – Casumo Horse Racing & Sports Betting Nursery Handicap (Jockey Club Grassroots Nursery Qualifier) Cl5 (2yo 0-75) 5f RTV

CASUMO KEY STAT: Trainer Clive Cox won this race in 2018

CASUMO VERDICT: The Mick Channon-trained Whistledown won at Nottingham two runs back but failed to follow-up next time at Ffos Las off a 6lb higher mark – she’s up another pound here, while those recent runs have come over 6f so this drop back to 5f might not be ideal. The Channon yard are also only 1-from-23 with their 2 year-olds at the track. The Archie Watson yard are 2-from-8 with their 2 year-olds here, so their Sagittarius must enter the mix with Hollie Doyle riding too. But, BLACK HILL STORM was a gutsy winner at Catterick last time out and even though he’s up 2lbs for that win, that might not be enough to stop him going close again. Connections are putting up Pierre-Louis Jamin here to claim 5lbs too and with six career runs to his name is the most experienced runner in the field. Angle Land and Romantic Time were both nice winners last time but are now into a handicap for the first time, so the other of interest is the Clive Cox-trained – JASTAR. The yard does well with their juveniles here (17%) and this colt has done well in his three runs to date, despite not winning. He’s another into a handicap for the first time and the cheekpieces on for the first time are interesting. The final plus is the yard also won this race in 2018, so clearly mark it as a prize to target each year.

CASUMO KEY STAT: Trainer Charlie Appleby has a 31% record with his 2 year-olds at the track

CASUMO VERDICT: Many 2 year-olds making their debuts here so the market will be worth a look in the build-up to the race. Of those that have had a race, Croupier and El Bodegon have set a fair standard. The Clive Cox yard won this race in 2017 and try to add to that success with Imcumbent. But this 2 year-old has not fired in his two runs to date and might be better once handicapped. The Hannon runner Oh Herberts Reign has run two solid races to date and should go well, while the Alan King yard catches the eye with two debut runners – Fast Forward and Reversion. Another stable that has won this prize recently is the Charlie Appleby camp (2018) so a chance is taken on their debutant – NEW MISSION. This well-bred Dubawi colt also has William Buick booked to ride so that indicates the horse should be ready to rumble. The yard also boasts a decent 31% record with their juveniles at the course and Buick has a 25% strike-rate at the track too. Others to note in the market of the unraced bunch are Hoo Ya Mal for Andrew Balding and Out From Under for Roger Charlton.

7:25 -Casumo Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Cl4 (3yo 0-80) 1m6f RTV

CASUMO KEY STAT: Trainer Charlie Appleby has a 26% record with his 3 year-olds at the track

CASUMO VERDICT: With ALL of the last six winners of this race drawn six or lower, this is a plus for Grand Scheme, Folly Beach, Khaiz, Winterwatch, Lion Face and Forever William. Of that lot, the Roger Charlton yard took this race the last time it was run in 2019, so their Lion Face has to be considered. Yes, this 3 year-old flopped last time out at Newbury, but is back in trip here and the blinkers are on for the first time. He gets in with just 8-9 and bottom weight, plus prior to that last run was a tidy winner at Leicester at the end of May – beating another runner here – Winterwatch. Of those drawn higher the only CD winner in the field – VINO VICTRIX – stayed on well to win over 1m6f here last time so staying this trip will be fine. He’s up 4lbs, but Ray Dawson is booked to ride and can take 3lbs of that off – he can go well. Praiano is to note, but the fact he was a beaten odds-on favourite last time out would be a worry. Forever William has run well in his races to date but is yet to get off the mark. A chance is also taken on the Charlie Appleby-trained KHAIZ. This 3 year-old is stepping up from 1m2f to 1m6f so connections clearly feel he’s a stayer in the making. He’s into a handicap for the first time too and the yard boast a decent 26% strike-rate with their 3 year-olds at the course.

CASUMO KEY STAT: History Writer won this race in 2018

CASUMO VERDICT: HISTORY WRITER (e/w) won this race in 2018 but is still rated 3lbs higher and has rather lost his way in recent runs too. He’s the only CD winner in the field though and the yard do boast a decent 27% record at the track so there is something to cling to for his supporters and might just be worth chancing with the useful Thomas Greatrex taking off a handy 3lbs. The Crisford camp won this race in 2019, so try again with Far Hope, while Rebel Territory and Shuv H’Penny King have cases too. The other pick though is the unbeaten BASHOSH, who has won both starts to date at Leicester and Doncaster. This Roger Varian 3 year-old will need more here now upped in grade but certainly has the most scope for improvement of the seven runners in the race.

8:25 – Casumo Proud To Support British Racing Fillies’ Handicap Cl5 (3yo+ 0-75) 1m1f RTV

CASUMO KEY STAT: Trainer David Elsworth has a 20% record with his 3 year-olds at the track

CASUMO VERDICT: The last six winners of this race came between stalls 2-6, so that’s a plus for Miss Scaletta, Light Of Thunder, Deep Sigh, Arctic Victory and Sharla. Keeper’s Choice is the only proven course winner in the field but also have a big weight (10-4) to deal with – jockey Tyler Heard does help by taking off 5lbs though. Others drawn a bit higher that catch the eye are Florence Street for the Andrew Balding yard and Tundra, while with a useful 20% record with their 3 year-olds at the track, the David Elsworth runner – PIROUETTE QUEEN (e/w) – is considered too. This 3 year-old is into a handicap for the first time today and having run well in her last two run doesn’t look too badly treated off an opening mark of 75. Trip and ground are fine and there should be more to come from this filly with just four career outings. The Ed Walker yard are only 2-from-27 so their Miss Scaletta is overlooked based on that. The other pick though is the David Simcock runner – DEEP SIGH – who was last seen winning by a neck at Doncaster. Up just 2lbs for that and seems to be a horse that acts on any ground. Jockey Andrea Atzeni also has a good record riding here and has experience with this horse too, having ridden her to be a close fourth at Leicester two runs back.
