Bundesliga Preview

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich eye quick response, Borussia Dortmund travel to Wolfsburg

You can never take anything for granted in the Bundesliga, and it is always packed with drama. There are a couple of crunches matches to look forward to this weekend, and in this preview, we will provide our thoughts on Bayern Munich v Arminia Bielefeld and Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund. We will also supply the latest odds for these games.

Bayern Munich target immediate response after stunning defeat to Augsburg

Bayern Munich have been a cut above their rivals for most of the campaign to date. But when they lose, especially against the likes of lowly Augsburg, it is head-scratching. Last Friday, Bayern slipped to their second defeat of the season with a 2-1 loss at the hands of Augsburg.

After going 2-0 down, Robert Lewandowski looked to have given the reigning champions a lifeline when he swept home a volley seven minutes before the interval. But Augsburg held on to claim a memorable victory, while Bayern will have rued missing the opportunity to open up a seven-point gap at the top of the table.

Robert Lewandowski scoops yet another individual accolade

Lewandowski’s goalscoring exploits have been nothing short of sensational. He looks poised to clinch the Ballon d’Or award. And the Polish hitman retained the 2021 Golden Player after he was voted the best over-21 player by a panel of experts. Lewandowski has hit 50 goals this calendar year, and he broke Gerd Muller’s record last season. He’s been a joy to watch as always!

Thomas Muller still looking to remain the king of the assist

Bayern, of course, will be desperate to banish memories of their shock defeat to Augsburg. But for some players, they are still hell-bent on breaking some record. Thomas Muller, for example, has contributed the most assists over the past couple of seasons, and he has already notched up nine assists in 12 starts this season. You imagine he will be involved against Arminia Bielefeld.

Arminia Bielefeld trying to keep their heads above water

For Arminia Bielefeld, it has been a miserable season to date. With just one win all season, they are 17th in the Bundesliga and a point from safety. Goals have been hard to come by, although they scored twice at home to Wolfsburg last weekend. Nevertheless, there could be a backlash from Bayern, who will be angry after their defeat to Augsburg.

Marco Rose sets new record for Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund are firmly on Bayern Munich’s coattails, and a 2-1 victory in their last outing against Stuttgart helped them move to within a point of the table toppers. More significantly, Dortmund is undefeated in their first seven home Bundesliga games under Marco Rose, which is a club record.

Against Stuttgart, Marco Reus grabbed his fourth goal of the campaign when he netted six minutes from the end of the game. Only Erling Haaland has netted more times for Dortmund, and Reus is indispensable to the Bumblebees. However, Dortmund has conceded more goals (18) than any of the other teams in the top four.

Perhaps more worryingly, Dortmund fans may not see Haaland back in action until the New Year. Haaland has missed the past three games with a hip strain, and the player’s father, Alfe-Inge Haaland, thinks the club may have to be patient. He said: “If he gets a couple of games in before Christmas, it will be a bonus, but even that’s uncertain.”

Wolfsburg hoping to end wretched record against Borussia Dortmund

Wolfsburg have been on a good run of late, and they are currently unbeaten in their past four matches in all competitions. Although they will have been disappointed to be held by Arminia Bielefeld, they are sixth on the table and just two points between them and third-placed SC Freiburg.

However, one thing Wolfsburg will want to address is their wretched record against Dortmund. Scoring a goal, let alone beating Dortmund, has been an eminently difficult task. In the corresponding fixture last season, Wolfsburg lost 2-0, with Haaland scoring both goals. But Dortmund is unlikely to be without Haaland this time around, so perhaps that might give Wolfsburg some hope.
