The Curragh racecourse stages their first horse racing fixture of the new flat turf season in Ireland this Saturday. 

There are eight races to take in at the Irish track and plenty of sports betting opportunities for horse racing fans to get stuck into

CURRAGH Horse Racing Tips (RacingTV) 

1:25 – Alkumait Standing At Castlefield Stud With A #100,000 Bonus Irish EBF Maiden (IRE Incentive) (2yo) 5f RTV

Noting much to go on here with each of these 2 year-olds having their debut runs. So, let’s look at the track stats for trainers with their juvenile runner – Ger Lyons has a 15% record here with his 2 year-olds and runs Midnight Tour, while the Jessie Harrington camp have a 16% strike-rate – they run Ocean Quest. However, a chance is taken on the Andrew Slattery entry – BORLETTI (e/w) – and the Jim Bolger runner – FINSCEAL GO DEO. Bolger actually won this race 12 months ago, so that’s a plus for him, while the Slattery outfit head here with a 19% record at the track with their juveniles. 

1:56 – DMG Media Handicap (3yo+) 5f RTV

A competitive handicap next, with many chances. Of the 11 runners, we’ve five proven course and distance winners – Master Matt, Primo Uomo, Pretty Boy Floyd, That’s Mad and DOWNFORCE (e/w). It’s the last-named that catches the eye having also won this race last year. Yes, his form figures since have been poor and he’s not getting any younger at 10, but he’s back on a 2lb lower mark and took this off a break last year so the 6-month absence isn’t a concern. Of the rest, the Condon yard (17%) do well with their 4+ year-olds here, so Swift Flight is interesting off a low weight, but with a 10lb claimer on the already-mentioned PRETTY BOY FLOYD (e/w) is the other pick as this 7 year-old seems to run his best races here and the yard also boast a 27% record with their 4+ year-olds here. 

2:31 – Cavalor Equine Nutrition Fillies & Mares Maiden (3yo+) 7f RTV

20 runners here, so looks a daunting race on paper, but the Aidan O’Brien yard took this prize last year and look to have another big chance with the Ryan Moore-ridden TOY. This 3 year-old has experience after a fair second in a similar race at the end of October and that run also came here at the track. She’s likely to have got stronger over the winter too and holds some fancy Group One entries so is clearly thought to have some ability. Of the rest, Karkiyna has plenty of experience, but the worry is that she’s not been able to win. Perfect Thunder has shown up well in her two races and can go well for the Joseph O’Brien yard, while Ha Ha Ha is an interesting newcomer for the Jessie Harrington team – plus the stable also run PRINCESS AZURE (e/w), who can give to selection most to think about.  

3:06 – Finlay Volvo (C & G) Maiden (3yo+) 7f RTV

Another big-field maiden here, so the betting will be a good guide. The likes of Admiralty Place, Karakoul, Lofoten and Rocket Carnival have shown fair form from their opening races to command respect. However, this is another race the powerful Aidan O’Brien yard won last year, so their newcomer – IVY LEAGUE – is worth chancing. Ridden by Ryan Moore this colt holds an Epsom and Irish Derby entry so must be well-thought of and is sure to be well forward. Culcor looks another interesting debutant for the Ger Lyons yard, but the more experienced BOUNDLESS OCEAN (Jim Bolger) can give the pick most to think about. 

3:41 – Lodge Park Stud Irish EBF Park Express Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) (3yo+) 1m RTV

Course winner Insinuendo sets a fair standard having run 4th in the G2 Blandford Stakes last time out in September. This slight drop in grade will help. CD winner Emphatic Answer is another that can run well, while Emile Gray and Neptune Rock are fair filles too. But it’s hard to get away from the Aidan O’Brien-trained MOTHER EARTH here, who is the clear top-rated in the field. She landed the English 1,000 Guineas last season and backed that up through the year with top runs at the highest level. Into Group 3 on her return will be an ease in grade and is expected to outclass this bunch. 

4:16 – Paddy Power Irish Lincolnshire (Premier Handicap) (4yo+) 1m RTV

Super-competitive renewal of this decent handicap, but with the last seven winners all drawn in stalls 5 or lower, then we are happy to focus on these runners – Prince Of Verona (1) (Reserve), Laelaps (2), Agitare (3), Bowerman (4) andTrue Artist (5). Of that bunch the BOWERMAN actually won this race in 2020 and is back for more. Ryan Moore catches the eye in the saddle and is also rated a pound lower than that win. Draw 4 looks perfect and heads here fit from three recent runs on the AW at Dundalk. The others draw low can go well too, but with the Ger Lyons yard winning this in 2017 and 2019, their SAN MARTINO (e/w) might be worth having a small saver on with a low weight – despite being drawn high (27). Others to respect are the consistent San Andreas, Tazaral from the shrewd Dermot Weld yard, Saltonstall and Casanova, who both come from the 2020 winning yard (Adrian McGuinness).  

4:51 – Barberstown Castle Handicap (4yo+) 1m RTV

Another race with many chances – with 21 runners! The consistent bunch of Jaafel, You Owe Me Money and the Ryan Moore-ridden Macadam’s Rock will be popular. While Miss Florentine is the only proven CD winner in the field so has to be on the shortlist for that alone. But the two that are worth chancing are recent Dundalk scorer FOX LEICESTER and the consistent PETTICOAT RULE (e/w). The former won going away on the AW just a few days ago (4 1/2) lengths) and despite being up 7lbs for that is clearly in good order. The drop back to a mile should be fine, but we know he also stays further than this, which connections can make use of. Sean D Bowen helps with his big weight to claim 7lbs. Petticoat Rule represents the Gillian Scott yard that won this race 12 months ago. She’s finished in the top three in all of her last 7 races and progressed nicely at the end of last season. 

5:21 – TRI Equestrian Handicap (3yo+ 50-70) 6f RTV

Another big-field handicap (21 runners). The Joseph O’Brien runner Red Wasp is interesting on her stable debut, having had just three runs. Hodd’s Girl will be fit from a spell on the AW, while the only course and distance winner in the line-up is CONVERSANT, and this 7 year-old also represents last year’s winning stable of Denis Hogan. He’s back from a break, but has run well off lay-offs in the past and jockey JM Sheridan, who can claim 3lbs, gets on well with him (ridden him the last 8 times). Hogan also runs Florence Thompson and LEXINGTON LIBERTY (e/w) – the last-named is worth a small saver too. Has come over from the Richard Hannon yard in the UK and despite yet to win a race gets in here off a career-low handicap mark. The tongue-tie is also on today and draw 5 looks helpful.
